Filter sand, also known as silica sand, is a naturally occurring sand that's used to filter water and remove impurities. It's used in a variety of applications, including: drinking water treatment, industrial water treatment, wastewater treatment, and swimming pools. Filter sand is effective because it's: High efficiency, Cost-effective, Environmentally friendly, and Long lasting. Filter sand is characterized by its: particle size distribution, low impurities, high hardness, and good hydraulic conductivity. Sand filters work by allowing water to slowly pass through the sand, which traps dirt particles in the sand's pores. They can't filter dissolved salts, but they can filter large solid particles like algae and organic material. Sand filters are cleaned by reversing the flow of water, a process called back-washing. Back-washing is required frequently because biofilm can develop on the sand grains and block the space between them. There are three main types of sand filters: rapid (gravity) sand filters, upward flow sand filters, and slow sand filters.
